PolyOne ‘Delivers on the Promise of Nanotechnology,’
Wins 2005 MANNY Award for Nanopolymers Breakthrough

CLEVELAND (June 13, 2005) – PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL) was recently acknowledged for its breakthrough in the use of nanotechnology to enhance the performance of plastics and end-use products. PolyOne’s Nanoblend™ Concentrates and Compounds received the 2005 MANNY Award for New Product Development/Innovation from Inside Business magazine in partnership with CAMP, Inc. in Northeast Ohio.

Nanoblend™ Concentrates and Compounds dramatically raise the physical and aesthetic performance of polyolefin resins to levels well beyond those of traditional filled plastics. The materials are based on nanoclays, which are very fine platelets that are roughly 1/10,000th the diameter of a human hair in thickness. When nanoclays are dispersed in traditional plastic resins or polymers, they can deliver a unique combination of performance and processing advantages, including light, stiff and tough performance.

“We are pleased that our Nanoblend™ Concentrates and Compounds are being recognized for their ability to deliver on the promised benefits of nanotechnology,” said Jim Gray, director of new technology for PolyOne. “As a result of this technological breakthrough, we are able to provide our customers with materials that approximate the performance of many engineering thermoplastics, combined with the light weight, aesthetics and processing advantages that are more typical of polyolefins. From automotive to packaging, from injection molding to film, the breadth of process and application potential for this technology is extraordinary.”

Offered in both compound and concentrate form, PolyOne is working with customers to replace neat as well as filled polymers with the more efficient and effective nanoclay-based materials. For compounders, the materials can be used as an additive to formulate proprietary nanocomposite products, while processors can let down the materials directly at the press to “dial in” specific properties.

Until now, many plastics industry efforts to compound nanoclays into a resin or polymer have resulted in limited property improvement or the materials were difficult to process. The difference is that PolyOne has exclusively teamed with Arlington Heights, Illinois nanoclay supplier Nanocor Inc. to ensure that the nanoclay platelets are effectively dispersed throughout the resin matrix.

Under an agreement with Nanocor, PolyOne is marketing and manufacturing nanoclay-based concentrates and compounds. Nanocor, the largest supplier of nanoclays for plastics and a wholly owned subsidiary of AMCOL International Corp., and PolyOne are sharing nanocomposite research and development responsibilities.
