Abstract: Nanomers formed by mixing a nanoclay with a polymer and a liquid carrier, and extruding the mixture through a die-opening to sorb (intercalate) the polymer between adjacent nanoclay layers. Sufficient polymer is adsorbed between the nanolayers to expand them to a spacing of at least 10 Å, and up to a distance of 55 Å, so that the Nanomer can be exfoliated into individual nanolayers by heating the polymer to its melting point to provide a nanocomposite.
